Gift Giving — Wrapping, Timing, and the Art of Omiyage

2 min

In Japan, gift giving isn't just polite — it's an art form with strict unspoken rules. Episode 5 explains omiyage culture, why the wrapping matters as much as the gift, when to give, when to receive, and the gifts you should never give in Japan.

Show notes

Omiyage = mandatory souvenir gifts after trips. Present with both hands, say tsumaranai mono desu ga. Recipients open later, not immediately. Avoid: clocks (time running out), knives (cutting relationship), sets of 4 (death). Wrapping matters as much as the gift.
