Ikigai conquered the West. Books, TED talks, four-circle Venn diagrams everywhere. But the Japanese concept of ikigai is completely different from what most people think. Episode 4 reveals what Okinawan elders actually mean by ikigai — and why the Western version misses the point.
Show notes
The famous 4-circle Venn diagram (love+skill+world needs+pay) was invented by a Spanish writer in 2014, NOT Japanese. True ikigai = iki(to live) + gai(value) = small daily reasons to wake up. Okinawan elders cite tiny things: greeting grandchildren, gardening, tea with neighbors. Many small ikigai, not one perfect mission.
